Miaow: a cat zine!

A recently resurfaced Tang dynasty painting of the zodiac animals shows a cat in place of the snake... Could this mean that it's actually the Year of the Cat this year?! What better time to launch a project dedicated to our favourite animal!

Miaow is a collaborative zine focused on all things cats! We hope to be a digital multimedia project to include illustrations, short fictions, photography, and perhaps even more~Theme: Cats!
Format: Digital
Dimensions: Square, 2500 x 2500 px
Compensation: TBD; free or for charityAre big cats or other members of the feline family included in the theme?This may change depending on the interest check but for now, the focus will be on the domestic cat. This can include hybrid species such as the Bengal cat but not wild species such as servals. They are, however, more than welcome to make guest appearances!Will humanoid or anthropomorphic characters with cat features be allowed?While humans and other species can join in, all pieces should feature the animal cat.Is this a physical or digital project?Miaow will be a purely digital project. There are currently no plans to transition to physical.Is this a for-profit or for-charity project?Miaow is planned to be either a free open-call or an application based for-charity project.What charity would you be donating to?If we decide to proceed as a charity zine, proceeds will be donated to the RAPS Cat Sanctuary located in Richmond, BC, Canada.Additionally, We hope to set up a system where supporters can instead choose to donate directly to a local cat related charity. We’ll just ask for a recently dated donation receipt in exchange for the digital zine. Hopefully this way we can more directly help kitties in need without funds getting lost in transaction and exchange fees!How many contributors will be included?The exact number will depend on the interest check results.If we move forward as a free open-call zine, there will be no limit! Everyone that signs-up within a set time frame will be accepted.If the zine is to move forward as a charity zine with an application model, we plan to have 20-25 page artists, 2-3 merch artists, 3-5 writers, and 0-3 additional media contributors (chef/photographer/cats etc.). Numbers are subject to change.How will contributors be compensated?All contributors will receive a copy of the final digital PDF and all accompanying digital merch. As we are not a for-profit or physical project, no monetary or physical compensation will be provided.Who are the mods?The project is currently headed by zxny. You can find my past zine experience here! If we receive enough interest to move forward with the project, additional mods will be recruited to assist with writers, socials, and/or graphics.

"Hello! I noticed the format for the pages seems to be square (2500x2500px) which is a bit unusual in the fanzine world, so I'm curious, is there a reason behind that format in particular?"

A:

"Since we're a digital only project, there's a lot more freedom to experiment with unusual dimensions so that's the big bulk of the reason! The less "vertical" dimension compared to the more typical A5 zine format also personally evokes a cute storybook asthetic and seems more in line with cookbooks.We realise square might not be the best format for text heavy pages and mobile users so the dimension isn't completely set in stone. As the remaining mods join the team, we'll make the final decision to make sure it's the best dimension for all mediums!"

“Are you making this Zine only accessible for paying customers? Or is there a free option? I feel that a free option on a digital zine would be ideal.”

A:

“If we go the charity route, the zine will initially be available to paying customers only so we can raise as much funds as possible for donation. But we will be considering free options such as donated community copies, or a delayed release of the zine itself without bundled merch.”

"This zine sounds so cute! Will real life cats (contributors' pets) be allowed?"

A:

"This has been a really popular request so far (who doesn't want to show off their cat!!). We'll definitely look into having a section for contributors to show off their irl cat~ Of course, contributors will also be more than welcome to incorporate their pets into their zine pieces."
